After searching high and low for a coffee table that matched the finish of my end tables (below), I wasn't sure what to do.I am an impulsive person, so I snatched up this coffee table below for $40, without a plan. I always wanted a lift up coffee table!
My husband was kind enough to give it a good sanding, while I searched the DIY websites and Youtube. I came up with a plan and crossed ALL of my fingers. I brought home many paint samples and matched up the dark and light colors in my end tables.
Actually my first thought was to give it a dark tan base coat that matched the wood on my coffee tables. After studying the sites, I did the opposite. The base was the light coat, that would simulate the bleached stain in the end tables.
Giving it a day to dry. I gritted my teeth and rolled on the darker color with the wood grain tool. Looking back, I wish that I bought the wider wood grain tool, this one was only about 4" wide. The wood grain paint (darker color than base) was a mix of the paint, same ratio of latex satin gloss, about 1/4 water. Immediately after applying I took a soft wide paint brush and brushed over the finish, softening the effect.
Unhappy with the darkness, (left). I found some white latex paint, added double the water and brushed it on, immediately wiping it off (right). This gave me the white washed finish I wanted.
Not bad! There are a few things I would have done differently, but I love it and have received numerous compliments.
The match to my end tables isn't exact, but it is close enough to fool the eye! I even caught my husband bragging about my skills to company!
