Neglected Hutch Gets Makeover

Over the Summer I thought..."Ya, know! I should post about our hutch." Well, I am so happy that thought came to me. This "Rustic Autumn Hutch" is prettier than I ever imagined. When we moved in 7 years ago, this is what it looked like. It was beautiful, but the wood was dry and very orange.

I decided to paint all of our kitchen cabinets and the built in hutch was part of that. There was no priming involved what so ever because the wood was dry and I used paint with the primer in it. To paint, I removed all of the knobs, but kept the cabinet doors and hinges on and painted them there. Yes, I even painted the hinges. I used a brush and a roller on the larger surfaces like the boards. Some areas required 3-5 coats of paint.

The kitchen was a lot of work, so I skipped painting the inside of the cabinets. Until now! I did remove the shelves to paint inside the cabinets. What a difference painting the cabinets inside made.

After I finished painting, I decided to play. I gave the pretty hutch an entire new look with rustic Fall decor. Natural elements such as the wood and mums give it a charm like I never expected. We have a fireplace in our kitchen adjacent to this hutch, so that is why I chose to stack the wood. Plus I LOVE WOOD. I put the mum pot inside a paper bag...so much prettier than the plastic green pot. I also added things I had like the scarf, thrift store silver platter, dollar store candles, and some beer and ice in the ceramic tub. Oh yeah...popcorn is a staple at our house.
