I love scrap wood projects. They are essentially free, and I enjoy the creative process of trying to figure out how to use leftover material in a new way.
For this project, I started with a pile of 1×4 cut offs left over from the master bedframe. Our master bedroom wall was bare, and I really wanted to add something over our bed. So, I decided to make a display shelf for candles.
First, I made the shelf frame. There are some options in how to attach the pieces of the frame together. I started by using brad nails, but the nails were not strong enough to hold the whole shelf together. I then added some screws (Pocket hole and countersink) to make the shelf stronger. If I were to make it over again, I would use pocket hole screws on all the top pieces and a mixture of pocket holes, countersink screws, and brad nails on all the middle and bottom pieces.
Second, I attached the back pieces to the shelf frame using brad nails.
I used Rustoleum Kona stain and a matte polyurathane finish. I then secured the shelf to wall by attaching it to the wall studs.
I added some LED candles and a few other candles we had laying around the house to decorate the shelf. Other decorations, such as small pictures or small knick knacks would fit in the shelf as well.
